ATA26GAM2000 - Artillery Duel/Ghost Manor

ATA26GAM2000 - Artillery Duel/Ghost Manor

Artillery Duel/Ghost Manor, Xonox, Double-ender cartridge only, 1983, Turn-Based Strategy/Action/Adventure, 1 or 2 players. One of several “double-enders” from Xonox, this two-sided cartridge contains two game programs: Artillery Duel and Ghost Manor. In Artillery Duel, a gun turret lies on both the left and right sides of the screen. Players, each controlling a turret, take turns firing across a mountainous landscape with the intention of destroying the other turret. Barrel angle, powder charge, and wind speed and direction make aiming strategic in nature, and various elements (turret and tree placement, for example) are randomly generated for each level. One of the more enjoyable two-player simultaneous games for the 2600, Artillery duel is similar to Smithereens! for the Odyssey2. Easily one of the two or three best Xonox games, Ghost Manor (often called the first survival horror game) is notable for being fun and atmospheric, as well as for being ahead of its time. Gamers guide a boy or a girl (a rarity for the era) from the graveyard outside a haunted house to the inside, where Dracula holds a prisoner that must be rescued. This involves walking through a maze (which is enhanced with electrified walls), shooting spears at bats, scorpions, and skulls, and keeping Dracula at bay with a cross. Very rare combination of titles.
